Millimeter Observations of Flares
نویسنده
چکیده
The nature of emission from solar ares at millimeter wavelengths is discussed. In the impulsive phase of ares, millimeter emission should be dominated by gyrosynchrotron emission from MeV{energy electrons. Millimeter telescopes are very sensitive to these electrons and can make high{resolution images of their sources for comparison with HESSI images, allowing us to investigate the behaviour of electron acceleration across a wide range of energies.

The emission of solar flares at millimeter wavelengths is of great interest both in its own right and because it is generated by the energetic electrons which also emit gamma rays. Since high-resolution imaging at gamma-ray energies is not presently possible, millimeter observations can act as a substitute. Except for that class of flares known as gamma-ray flares the millimetric emission is op...

We report the results from recent observations of Sgr A* at short-/submillimeter wavelengths made with the partially finished Sub-Millimeter Array (SMA) on Mauna Kea. A total of 25 epochs of observations were carried out over the past 15 months in 2001 March to 2002 May. Noticeable variations in flux density at 1.3 mm were observed showing three “flares”. The SMA observations suggest that Sgr A...

متن کاملSolar Observations with a Millimeter-Wavelength Array1
Rapid developments in the techniques of interferometry at millimeter wavelengths now permit the use of telescope arrays similar to the Very Large Array at microwave wavelengths. These new arrays represent improvements of orders of magnitude in the spatial resolution and sensitivity of millimeter observations of the Sun, and will allow us to map the solar chromosphere at high spatial resolution ...
